Cloud Recovery Testing: A Backup Is Not a Recovery Plan

Recovery readiness depends on tested restoration and business priorities. Verify how your systems return to service instead of relying on the existence of a backup.

Prioritize the business workflow

List the functions that must return first and the dependencies they require. A database restored without identity, networking or configuration may not restore the actual service. Agree on acceptable data loss and disruption with the people who own the process.

Keep these requirements distinct from what the current architecture happens to provide. If there is a gap, make it visible rather than describing the system as resilient by default.

Test the full restoration path

Restore data into an isolated environment and verify that the application can use it. Check secrets, permissions, external services and operational documentation. Confirm who can perform the steps if the usual administrator is unavailable.

AWS’s reliability material treats recovery as an architectural and operational concern. Your test should validate the specific assumptions behind your deployment.

Turn the result into an action plan

Record the tasks that took longer than expected or depended on undocumented knowledge. Fix those weaknesses and repeat the exercise after significant changes. Avoid exposing production customer data in a test environment without appropriate safeguards. A recovery exercise should create evidence, not a decorative readiness label.

A practical next step

  • Identify the first business functions to restore.
  • Test dependencies beyond the database.
  • Document access and decision-making responsibilities.
  • Repeat restoration after material architecture changes.
